About Utilita

Utilita is a small, specialist energy provider which began operating in 2003, focusing on providing tariffs for customers with pay as you go (PAYG) meters.

Tariffs and Pricing

Utilita focuses specifically on customers who have prepayment meters, and they have a variety of tariffs suitable for most customers. These tariffs are all variable, but come with a host of specially designed PAYG features to improve the customer experience, and to help tackle fuel poverty:

• Different unit rates: This means that Utilita charge you different amounts depending on how much energy you have used in a day. If you have used at least 2 kWh, you will be charged less per unit of energy than before you reached the threshold. If you have a smart meter this threshold changes to £0.64 spent on energy a day before the lower costs kick in.
• No standing charge: If you do not use any energy, you will not have to pay anything. Most energy companies will still charge you even if you do not use any energy.
• Emergency credit: Utilita provide you with £15 of emergency credit if you are going through financial hardships and are struggling to top up your energy, meaning you can wave goodbye to your hot water cutting out suddenly when you are in the shower. They also make sure that you will not lose your energy supply between 2pm and 10am, meaning you will never be stuck without energy while being unable to visit a shop to top up, because they have closed for the night.

Utilita Smart Meters

Utilita are offering smart meter upgrades to homes who wish to have them installed. Just get in contact with them to find out if your area has been reached by the government’s smart meter rollout and they will book an engineer to come and install one for you.

Utilita have developed an award-winning smartphone app, My Utilita. You can use it to get your meter readings without having to check the actual meter, and to top up on your phone remotely, to save you those annoying trips to the shop. 

Prepayment Plans

Utilita offer a variety of plans for those on prepayment meters. The tariff that you end up on will depend on what type of meter that you have, whether it be a normal PAYG meter, an E7 meter, or a smart Pay As You Go meter.

Each tariff has different rates per kWh of energy, so make sure that you get a quote to find out if it is the best deal for you.

Utilita Exit Fees

Utilita do not offer any fixed term contracts to new customers; all of their tariffs are variable. They therefore charge any exit fees for customers who wish to leave.

This means that you are free to switch energy suppliers without needing to pay anything so you can try them out knowing that you can leave at any point if you are not satisfied with the prices and the service.

Fuel Mix

Utilita are quite reliant on the burning of fossil fuels in providing electricity for its prepayment customers. 6.3 percent of its fuel mix comes from coal, which is up from the national average of 3.9%.

The majority of their fuel mix comes from natural gas, with this making up 72%, and just 8.3 percent comes from renewable energy sources, which is far below the national average of 37.7 percent.
