Formed in 1990, Scottish Power is an energy firm based in Glasgow and providing gas and electricity tariffs across large areas of Scotland, as well as other parts of the UK. As one of the largest UK suppliers with over 170,000 customers, they are one of the former* ‘big six’.
*Since the acquisition of Npower by E.ON and SSE by OVO, the ‘big six’ is now the ‘big five’.
Scottish Power offer three main tariffs for dual fuel customers:
Customers can also add boiler insurance on top of their fixed price tariffs.
Scottish Power also offer a tariff for electric vehicle owners. This gives you cheaper rates overnight, when you are most likely to be charging your electric vehicle, which they claim can help you charge for less than an eighth of the cost of petrol per mile.
Scottish Power participate in the government’s Warm Home Discount Scheme, which aims to help the most vulnerable members of society be able to afford their energy bills when the weather is colder.
If you are eligible for the scheme, Scottish Power will provide you with a rebate of £140 on your gas and electricity bills in the winter months, when you are likely to be using extra energy in comparison with the summer months.
Scottish Power’s green tariffs offer 100% renewable power. Scottish Power are one of the UK’s largest electricity suppliers of wind power into the national grid, with over 40 wind farms across Scotland, England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
The firm’s standard tariffs use a more modest 36% renewable power, with 50% coming from natural gas and the rest split between other fossil fuels and nuclear.

On top of producing energy, Scottish Power also maintain and distribute energy across networks to over 3.5 million customers. These span the Central and Southern parts of Scotland, as well as customers in Merseyside, North Wales, Cheshire and Shropshire.
They provide upgrades and invest into these networks, to make sure that supplies of electricity are always running to people’s homes.
In line with the government rollout, Scottish Power are installing smart meters in the homes of any customers who want one. Smart meters make your bills far more accurate, and you can clearly see how much you are spending on your energy with the in-home display. This shows you exactly how much energy you are using in real-time, helping you make decisions to save money and energy.
If you have a prepayment meter, Scottish Power can also install a smart PAYG meter in your home. This means that you can track your spending online, and you can also top up your gas and electricity using the Scottish Power App, which saves you those annoying trips to the shop when your lights cut out.
With over 30,000 ratings on reviews platform Trustpilot, Scottish Power score 3.6 out of 5, which gives them an overall customer score of “Average”.
While there are many customers who are happy with the customer service and the prices that they pay, there are some customers who have complained that it can be difficult to get hold of advisors. Others have complained that they have been paying more with Scottish Power than their previous providers.

Scottish Power do charge exit fees for breaking fixed contracts early. However, this depends on the tariff that you are on. Their 2 Years Fixed Price Energy tariff does not have any exit fees, but their 1 Year Fixed Price Energy tariff, as well as their packages which include boiler cover, come with exit fees of £30 per fuel, or £60 altogether if you are a gas and electricity customer.
Their variable tariffs do not come with any exit fees.
