Avro Energy was founded in 2012, and started trading in December 2015. It has not been without its problems since it started however, having been briefly banned from taking on new customers in 2019 by Ofgem.
They had initially not complied with an order to become a Data Communications Company (DCC) user, which is a necessary step to enable smart meter enrolment. This prompted rumours that the company was about to go bust and declare bankruptcy, however they made changes to comply and were allowed to resume trading soon after.

If you have a newer SMETS2 smart meter, this process will be seamless, and Avro Energy will receive all of your meter readings. However, if your home has an older SMETS1 smart meter, you will have to send manual meter readings to Avro Energy yourself, although they are working on ways to cut out this hassle.
Avro Energy reviews are consistently positive, with their Trustpilot score of 4.5 stars out of 5 ranking as ‘Excellent’. Customers are generally pleased with the quality of service, as well as the low prices that Avro Energy offer.
There are a number of reviews which air some concerns about the customer service however, although the majority are positive. The biggest concern appeared to be over wait times, and a Which? survey found that average call response times were about 20 minutes, making it one of the longest wait times for an energy supplier.
