Bulb is a London-based green energy supplier, which has grown rapidly since forming in 2015. With consistently excellent reviews, and very competitive prices, Bulb now boast over two million customers and this is increasing by an average of 50,000 a month.
Formed by two former workers in the energy industry, Bulb Energy’s focus is on providing customers with clean, green, renewable energy, at below the typical market rate.
They aim to make energy ‘simpler, cheaper and greener’, helping the consumer save on their gas and electricity bills, while also helping to save the planet. Bulb set out to disrupt the energy market, and their rapid growth suggests that they may have succeeded.
Bulb’s energy offering is rather unique, in that they only offer a single monthly tariff. This is a variable tariff, which means that it is vulnerable to fluctuations depending on the cost of producing electricity and buying gas on the market, as well as inflation.
The amount you pay per kWh of energy will depend on where you live, but rates are usually low, particularly in comparison with some of the more traditional suppliers. They claim that they can keep the Bulb energy prices low by investing in technology, which can help keep their operating costs down.
Not only do Bulb not charge exit fees to customers who chose to switch away from them, they will in fact pay any exit fees your current supplier might charge, if you switch from them to Bulb.
No, Bulb do not offer any fixed rate plans. Part of their drive to make energy ‘more simple’ involves just having that one, single, variable rate tariff, for direct debit customers available without locking in to a lengthy contract.
This means that there will be no drastic increases in price for customers after a year or two, as there often are after fixed term contracts expire, and that there will be no exit fees if you choose to switch from Bulb.
Yes, Bulb also offer a Pay as You Go tariff for customers who prefer to be on a prepayment meter. This can be topped up at any PayPoint or Payzone store, putting it at an advantage to other competitors, such as British Gas, who can only be topped up at a Payzone store.
Bulb also offer a Smart Pay as You Go option if you have a smart meter. On this plan, you can top up your gas and electricity without having to take a trip to your local shop by paying on an app on your smartphone. This has been particularly useful given the coronavirus pandemic over the last year, allowing more vulnerable customers to top up their gas and electricity without having to come in contact with others.
Bulb’s fuel mix consists of 100% renewable energy, with the electricity coming from solar, wind and hydroelectric sources.
Bulb also purchase green gas (such as gas produced from biomass), meaning that some of the gas provided is renewable.

When you switch to Bulb Energy, you will still be getting your electricity from the national grid, meaning that the energy in your home is not specifically any greener than from any other energy supplier.
However, the money you pay for your energy bill is used by Bulb to purchase energy from renewable energy sources, rather than purchasing traditional fossil fuels. This means that the energy on the national grid will become greener.
Bulb also supply 100% carbon neutral gas. This means that the carbon emissions that are a product of the use of gas in your home is offset by their ‘carbon reduction projects’ across the globe. These include the planting of trees and protecting rainforests.
The Trustpilot Bulb Energy review has seen over 70,000 customers give the company an overall score of five stars, which is rated as ‘Excellent’.
