Since being formed in 2009, OVO Energy has gone from strength to strength, and is now the second largest provider of energy in the UK, behind British Gas.

On top of the renewable-only tariffs for the energy provided to your home, OVO also provide smarter home products and smart electric vehicle charging to make your gas and electricity bill go further.

Tariff and Pricing Details

OVO Energy offer four gas and electricity tariffs for customers:

• Better Energy: Their standard dual fixed rate energy plan comes with a twelve month contract and a promise that your prices will not rise during this period.
• 2 Year Fixed Energy: OVO also offer a popular two-year fixed rate energy plan, which guarantees that your energy prices will not change for the length of the contract. This allows you to better budget your household costs, knowing that the price you pay will not increase in line with inflation or energy production costs.
• Simpler Energy: This is the standard variable rate tariff that OVO offer, and the prices can fluctuate up or down depending on the costs of wholesale energy.
• Better Smart: This tariff is specialised to customers with a smart meter, which allow you to better control how much energy you are using, with real time breakdowns of how much gas and electricity you are using at any one time. If you already have a smart meter installed then great, you are already set but if you do not, OVO will install one for you.

On top of any of these plans, for £6 a month extra, you can upgrade your plan to OVO Beyond, which will mean that the gas provided in your home is also 100% carbon neutral along with your electricity. The carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere when you burn gas is offset by projects around the world which aim to take CO2 out of the atmosphere, such as planting and protecting forests. 

Can I Join OVO Energy with a prepayment meter?

While OVO Energy themselves do not provide any deals for those on prepayment meters, their sister energy provider Boost Energy has a pay as you go energy tariff.

Boost Energy’s electricity is 50 percent from renewable sources, and they offer a PayPoint store offer top up, or a smart PAYG plan if you have a smart meter, which can be topped up by using your smartphone.

OVO Fuel Mix

OVO’s fuel mix is 100% from renewable energy sources. This means your energy supply comes from sources such as solar power and wind farms.

As an OVO Energy customer, they will plant one tree for you every year, in a small but not insignificant part of the fight against rising carbon dioxide levels in our atmosphere. To date, they have planted nearly 2 million trees in the UK.

OVO Acquisitions

Since entering the market, OVO Energy have made a few high profile acquisitions, which has allowed them to take on the customers of these former energy firms, while increasing their share of the market.

SSE Energy:

The largest one of OVO’s acquisitions was ‘big six’ firm SSE, which occurred in the second half of 2020, making them the second largest energy provider in the country.

Spark Energy:

In 2018, after small supplier Spark Energy entered administration, a competitive process determining who would take on their customers began.

By November, the energy sector regulator Ofgem announced that OVO had won out in the process and were to take on the nearly 300,000 accounts that Spark had provided for previously.

Customer Service

With nearly 50,000 reviews on Trustpilot, OVO Energy have an overall 4.3 star rating, which is graded as ‘Excellent’.

Most customers are highly satisfied with the service that they receive and the price transparency of their accounts.

In 2020, OVO Energy won the BusinessGreen Leaders Award for Company of the Decade.
